STEPHEN
F. AUSTIN WITH DOG
This monumental piece, painted c. 1820s or 1830s by a Chicago
artist named Brand, is a copy of another painting which
was lost in the 1881 fire that destroyed the limestone Capitol
on this site. Both paintings were based upon a c. 1833 watercolor
on ivory miniature of Austin. This painting was donated
to the State of Texas in 1889 for display in the House Chamber
by William Joel Bryan and Guy M. Bryan, Jr., nephew and
grand nephew of Stephen F. Austin. According to the 1889
House Journal, the painting was carried into the House Chamber
covered with a Lone Star flag.
